It was only just a few years ago that the rotary dial was the standard way to dial – before that, you had to pick up the phone which was directly connected to the operator who connected you their end.

The fully working American diner telephone is wall mounted with a side cradle and curly cable. It has a black plastic finish with a white silver trim.

In the 1950’s the American diner telephones were originally pay phones. Today they still retain their three slots for coins which is connected to a lower storage area which is access via lock and key. This can now be used as a ‘piggy bank’ for most coins. The phone no longer needs coins to be used though it is a novelty to hear the jingle of the coins and a ‘ping’ as they enter the payphone slot.
