Vintage Candlestick Phones

The vintage candlestick phone became popular in the 1900’s. It was also known as the ‘Upright phone’. These candlestick phones used a magneto system when they were first used by the public. The phone has a ‘subset’ which is basically a wooden box which contains and hides the crank, bell and battery. The quality of the materials used and the time and effort that was put into making it can be seen from the mouthpiece which is shaped like a bell to the receiver cord which is cloth covered.

It was popular for cartoonists to draw these phones especially in a humorous context as items could pretend to be hidden within the candle framework. These drawings continued right up to and sometimes beyond the 1970’s.

Sadly the candlestick phone went out of fashion as newer push button designs emerged so it was no longer made from the 1930’s.

The push button phone remains the most popular today and it continues to re emerge in new ultra modern and funky designs.

The candlestick phone is now vintage and classic and is now a collector’s item.

Many old fashioned dolls houses use a miniature version of the candlestick phone to give an authentic look to the rooms and house and to keep within its period of history.
